20 of the Fastest Muscle Cars Ever Built
When it comes to picking 20 of the fastest muscle cars ever built, we made sure to leave no stone unturned to select the cars that represent the category in the most appropriate ways possible. You may see a few of your favorites not making the list, but you will see a few that you will nod in agreement with as I’m sure they are on your short list of “dream cars.” While we had a few arguments amongst ourselves, we agreed that the lap times and the horsepower explain the picks.
1969 Chevrolet Corvette
Quarter Mile Time: 13.56 Seconds
When talking about the 1969 Corvette we often forget to mention that the engines and chassis were largely carried over from the previous generation. That’s a small detail when talking about its powerful 427 L88 engine rated at 430 horsepower and mated to an automatic gearbox. This beast knocked down the quarter-mile sprint in 13.56 seconds averaging 111.1 miles per hour.
For the 1969 production run only 116 cars were produced with the L88 engine option. These often didn’t make it to the dealerships and were special orders so they didn’t come with many of the amenities like radios or heaters. Some of the coolest features on the L88s were transistor ignition (the ignition now appears on the steering column and a key lock replaced the door depression button used in 1968), special front and rear suspension and heavy-duty brakes.
Stingray badges appear on the front fenders and on top of the four vertical fender vents. This vehicle is one that all Corvette enthusiasts can look at and appreciate.
