Sweet On The Street: Amazing 1970 Pontiac GTO Convertible
1970 Pontiac GTO Convertible
400/350 HP, Protect-O-Plate
During the golden era of muscle cars every manufacturer rushed gas-chugging, tough-sounding V-8s to market. Pontiac answered with “The Humbler”—the 1970 GTO. Only 2,173 convertibles left the factory with the 400/350 HP engine. Sky-high insurance rates and tightening emissions meant 1970 became the lowest-production GTO year since its 1964 introduction.
This was Pontiac’s swan-song to raw muscle. By the mid-’70s, emissions regs and marketing shifts steered America toward smaller, forgettable four-cylinder sedans—ending an era.
Clean, understated lines and a powerful stance showcase Pontiac’s finest styling. Power brakes, power steering, Rally II wheels and Uniroyal Tiger Paws made this convertible a do-everything muscle car.
Sold new at Schappe Pontiac in Madison, WI, the car remained with its original owner until 2005. A body-off restoration was completed that year; Mann Speed Specialty rebuilt the numbers-matching 400 in 2015. She’s fresh, correct and headed to the next Mecum auction.
